Abstract
Glucose oxidase, an enzyme mainly produced by certain species of fungi and other microorganisms, is very important from commercial aspect. Currently extracted on a large scale from Aspergillus niger, it is an enzyme that has found diverse utilization in numerous industries. Scientists have been trying to explore new microorganisms and different ways to modulate the producer strains so as to amplify the production of this enzyme and make the extraction process efficient and cost effective. This review assesses the current data about the enzyme, its characterization and its industrial application. It provides a bird's eye view of the significant impact the enzyme has in our society and explores avenues to expand its applications. With access to modern biotechnology, it has become a lot easier to manipulate the production of this crucial enzyme to suit our needs. From production to purification, there are numerous points where the manipulations can be done to get optimum yield. However, a lot of landscape, where this enzyme can be put use to, remains to be explored. More research is required to validate the existing data. This review paper presents an overview on various aspects and commercial applications of the glucose oxidase including current challenges ahead.
