Abstract
The presence of industrial, domestic and agricultural wastes in the aquatic system has been widely recognized as a potential threat to the aquatic environment. The present study aims to investigate the involvement of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) in the induction of oxidative stressrelated effects such as peroxidation of membrane lipids and alterations in antioxidant enzymes. Lamellidens corrianus were exposed to 0.5 ppm concentration of anthracene for 7 days and 14 days, followed by transfer of exposed animals to toxicant free water for four days after each treatment for assessment of recovery pattern. After anthracene treatment, significant (P<0.05) increase in lipid peroxidation was observed in gill, foot, mantle and muscle tissues with significant (P<0.05) recovery in all the tissues after recovery period. Significant elevation of (P<0.05) Catalase, Glutathione Reductase and Glutathione S-Transferase activities was observed in treated groups, however, only foot and gill tissues could recover significantly after four days of recovery period. Thus anthracene induced oxidative stress in animals; however antioxidant enzyme activities were increased as first defence to challenge oxidative stress.
