Abstract
Experiments are carried out on single cylinder four-stroke diesel engine which consists of air gap insulated piston, air gap insulated liner and ceramic coated cylinder head. Vegetable oils are considered to replace diesel fuels as their properties are compatible with diesel fuel. However, the drawbacks of low volatility and high viscosity associated with vegetable oils call for hot combustion chamber, provided by low heat rejection (LHR) diesel engine. Pollution levels of smoke and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) of LHR engine with different test fuels such as jatropha oil based bio-diesel and pongamia oil based bio-diesel are compared to conventional engine with pure diesel operation. Smoke levels decreased with LHR engine with vegetable oils in comparison with conventional engine with pure diesel operation.
