Uma Sharma and Neha Pathak

Abstract

Solanum melongena L., commonly consumed worldwide as a nutritious vegetable, is renowned for its diverse health promoting properties. It is extensively cultivated and valued for its abundance of naturally occurring bioactive constituents. The plant is particularly rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, potassium, vitamin B6, and phytonutrient compounds such as flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides etc. all of which contribute to lowering the risk of chronic diseases including cancer and cardiovascular disorders. Its low caloric content supports weight management, while its neuroprotective and cholesterol-lowering effects further enhance overall physiological well-being. Phytochemical screening of the leaf extract of Solanum melongena L. revealed the presence of a wide spectrum of secondary metabolites, including terpenoids, phenolic compounds, alkaloids, and saponins. These metabolites possess significant medicinal potential and contribute to the plant’s therapeutic relevance. The findings underscore the metabolic richness of eggplant, emphasizing its antioxidant capacity and highlighting its promise for nutraceutical, pharmacological, and biopharmaceutical applications.
