Abstract

Scientific communities have emphasized to work on natural products that are derived from plants to develop bio-pesticides as potential source for mosquito control. Bio-pesticides are environmentally safe products not only for target organisms (especially mosquitoes and its larvae) but also for non-target organisms (especially human beings). Therefore, it was proposed to develop a new means of insecticide with a biodegradable, less toxic and eco-friendly way of mosquito control. Whole plant materials of Hyptis suaveolens (L.) after shade drying pulverized to get powder and 70-77% loss in weight were reported, respectively. Then, Soxhlet extraction of plant Hyptis suaveolens (L.) was performed for isolation of extracts using various solvents and the percentage yield of extract was measured, i.e. 19.74% in distilled water. In Thin Layer Chromatography of Hyptis suaveolens (L.) extract toluene: ethyl acetate (70:30) menstruum was used and 5 spots (Hs-1-5) with RF Value (0.26, 0.52, 0.67, 0.74, 0.82) were obtained. Hyptis suaveolens (L.) extract was tested for larvicidal efficacy against Anopheles stephensi and Aedes aegypti, the vector of malaria and dengue, respectively. The third-instar larvae of mosquito when treated with 25mg/500ml concentration of Hyptis suaveolens aqueous extract, it showed LC50 values 53.33±10.00% mortality with S.E. and when treated with 500mg/500ml concentration of Hyptis suaveolens aqueous extract, it showed 83.66±11.55% mortality with S.E., respectively after 24hours. Thus, the distilled water extract of Hyptis suaveolens (L.) is a promising source for the control of mosquito’s larvae.
