Abstract
This case report describes the icterus in a cat caused by secondary rodenticide poisoning. A tom of 7 months of age, weighing 3.6 kg was presented to OPD-Medicine, TVCC, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Udgir in comatose state with right lateral recumbency with the history of anorexia, vomiting, dark yellow urine and absence of defecation for one day. Clinical examination revealed icteric ocular conjunctivae, gums, ear pinna, foot pad and inguinal region, intense yellow urine, dry muzzle, rough hair coat, tachycardia (160 beats/minute) and polypnea (69 breaths/minute). On asking, the owner revealed that the cat has eaten a mouse died due to Rodenticide intoxication two day before. Haemato-biochemistry revealed leucocytosis with neutrophilia, decreased value of RBC, Hb, PCV, increased value of SGOT, SGPT, bilirubin and BUN (Blood urea nitrogen). Blood smear examination was found negative for presence of any hemoparasite. Based on history, clinical examination and haemato-biochemistry the case was diagnosed as Rodenticide intoxication induced jaundice. The tom was treated with Inj. Ranitidine, Inf. Dextrose 5%, Inj Cefotaxime for 7 days, and syrup liv-52, syrup Vitabest and syrup hemobest for 30 days. The tom started showing clinical improvement on day 3rd of treatment and on day 7 of treatment colour of urine came to normal, the blood picture came to near normal. The complete clinical recovery was observed on day 30.
