Abstract
A two-year field experiment was carried out to investigate the âProduction potential of pigeonpea in pigeonpea-based intercropping system under rainfed conditions of Nagalandâ during 2021 and 2022 kharif season at the research farm of the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized block design and was replicated thrice and consisted of seventeen treatment combinations such as: T1 - pigeonpea + rice (1:1), T2 - pigeonpea + rice (1:2), T3 - pigeonpea + rice (1:3), T4 - pigeonpea + sesame (1:1), T5 - pigeonpea + sesame (1:2), T6 - pigeonpea + sesame (1:3), T7 - pigeonpea + greengram (1:1) , T8 - pigeonpea + greengram (1:2) , T9- pigeonpea + greengram (1:3), T10 - pigeonpea + soybean (1:1) , T11 - pigeonpea + soybean (1:2) , T12- pigeonpea + soybean (1:3), T13 â sole pigeonpea, T14 â sole rice, T15 â sole sesame, T16 â sole greengram and T17. The intercropping system used for pigeonpea with other crops had no impact on the overall yield of pigeonpea. However, the yield increased in the case of additional intercrops, which eventually increased the total production rate of the pigeonpea intercropping system. Pigeonpea + soybean (1:1) T10 was found to perform better than the rest of the treatments, whereas Pigeonpea + soybean(1:3) T12 produced the highest pigeonpea equivalent yield (PEY), which was significantly higher than the rest of the treatments.
