HIGHLY FUNCTIONALIZED HETEROCYCLIC CHEMOSENSOR FOR COLORIMETRIC DETECTION OF METAL IONS IN AQUEOUS MEDIA

Bakiyalakshmi G. and Selvanathan G.

Abstract

A highly functionalized heterocyclic chemosensor was synthesized via a diazo-coupling reaction and characterized by FT-IR, ^1H NMR, and ^13C NMR spectroscopy. Its colorimetric sensing performance toward metal ions in aqueous media was investigated using UV-Visible spectroscopy. The chemosensor exhibited selective optical responses and stable complex formation with target metal ions, as confirmed by Spectrophotometric titration and Job’s plot analysis. Its practical applicability was demonstrated in EDTA complexometric titration for water hardness determination, showing performance comparable to the conventional Eriochrome Black T indicator. The developed chemosensor offers a simple, rapid, and cost-effective approach for metal ion detection and environmental water analysis.
