CLIMATE CHANGE, ECOLOGICAL VULNERABILITY, AND BIODIVERSITY LOSS: AN ADAPTIVE SUSTAINABILITY STUDY OF THE DOOARS REGION, WEST BENGAL

Abstract

Climate change has intensified ecological vulnerability and biodiversity loss across ecologically sensitive regions worldwide. The Dooars region of West Bengal, located at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, represents a biodiversity-rich yet fragile landscape increasingly exposed to climatic variability and anthropogenic pressures. This study investigates the interlinkages between climate change, ecological vulnerability, and biodiversity decline in the Dooars region, with an emphasis on adaptive sustainability strategies. Using a qualitative methodology based on secondary data, the study analyses environmental trends, policy responses, and regional case studies. The findings reveal that climate-induced habitat alteration, deforestation, and human-wildlife conflicts are major contributors to biodiversity loss. The study recommends integrated ecological planning, community-based adaptation, and policy interventions to enhance resilience and sustainability.
