Abstract
Uniform and rapid seed germination is essential for achieving better crop establishment and productivity in green gram (Vigna radiata L.). Seed priming is an effective, economical, and eco-friendly technique that enhances seed quality and seedling vigour. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different seed priming treatments on germination and seedling vigour in green gram under laboratory conditions. The results revealed significant variation among varieties and priming treatments for all seed quality parameters. Among the varieties, IPM 512-1 recorded the highest germination percentage (94.17%), whereas IPM 409-4 exhibited superior performance for seedling growth, vigour indices, and speed of germination. Among the priming treatments, GA @ 150 ppm for 8 hours significantly improved germination (98.04%), root length (14.04 cm), shoot length (18.28 cm), seedling length (32.32 cm), fresh weight (4.17 g), dry weight (0.806 g), and vigour indices compared to the control. However, lower electrical conductivity, indicating better membrane integrity, was observed in control treatments. The interaction effect indicated that IPM 409-4 in combination with GA priming performed best for most traits. Therefore, seed priming with GA @ 150 ppm for 8 hours can be recommended as an effective seed enhancement strategy for improving germination, seedling vigour, and planting value in green gram.
