Abstract
Uniform and rapid seed germination is essential for better crop establishment and productivity in black gram (Vigna mungo L.). Seed priming is an effective and economical technique for enhancing germination and seedling vigour. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different priming treatments on germination and seedling vigour in black gram under laboratory conditions. The results revealed significant variation among varieties and priming treatments for all seed quality parameters. Among the varieties, IPU-2-43 recorded the highest germination percentage (94.17%), whereas PDU-1 exhibited superior performance for seedling growth and vigour traits. Among the priming treatments, GA3 @ 200 ppm for 10 hours significantly improved germination (92.71%), speed of germination (39.00), mean daily germination (13.24), seedling length (31.70 cm), and vigour indices compared to the control. The interaction effect indicated that PDU-1 in combination with GA3 priming performed best for most traits. Therefore, seed priming with GA3 @ 200 ppm for 10 hours can be recommended for enhancing germination, seedling vigour, and planting value in black gram.
