IMPACT OF TRICLOSAN ON PROTEIN CONTENT OF THE STRIATED MUSCLE IN THE FRESHWATER FISH- OREOCHROMIS MOSSAMBICUS

Abstract

Triclosan is a chlorinated phenolic antimicrobial endocrine disrupting chemical which is an emerging pollutant in freshwater environments. In the present work, an attempt was made to study the effects of triclosan on the protein content of striated muscle in the freshwater fish Oreochromis mossambicus (Mozambique tilapia). Healthy and Juvenile fishes were exposed to triclosan concentrations ranging from 0 to 2.0 mg L-¹ under static laboratory conditions for 96 hours. The 96-h LC50 value was determined as 1.12 mg L-¹ (95% confidence limits: 1.05-1.20 mg L-¹) and it was calculated using Finney’s Probit analysis. The fishes were chronically exposed to three different concentrations, that is 0.112 mg L-¹, 0.224 mg L-¹, 0.336 mg L-¹ based on LC50 to study the toxic effects of long time exposure. The protein content of test fish showed a decrease when compared with the control fish. It was also noticed that the protein content of fish gradually decreases with increasing triclosan concentration and exposure time. The outcome of this study suggests that TCS can cause a change in biochemical constituents even at very low concentrations.
