Abstract
The present study highlights the impact of rapid urbanization on the Adi Ganga stretch in Kolkata. Analysis of multi-temporal satellite data from 2008 to 2023 revealed a significant increase in built-up area (+68.60 sq. km), while a marked decline in vegetation cover (-48.40 sq. km). As a result of uncontrolled urban expansion, these land use/land cover (LULC) transitions had a direct impact on the deterioration of both surface water (SW) and ground water (GW) quality. The findings highlight the critical need for restoration efforts, efficient water quality control, and sustainable urban development in order to protect the ecological health of Adi Ganga and ensure the long-term availability of clean water resources in the region.
