Abstract
This study assessed the morphological diversity of 45 F hybrids and 10 parental genotypes of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch. ex Poir.) using 13 morphometric traits as per the DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability) guidelines. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications during the Zaid seasons of 2024â25 and 2025-26 in Uttar Pradesh, India. Observations were recorded on key vegetative and reproductive traits, including leaf shape, fruit shape, flesh thickness, and seed characteristics. The analysis revealed significant variability among the hybrids and parental lines, particularly in fruit morphology, fruit skin colour and flesh colour, Petiole length indicating a wide genetic base within the experimental material. Such variability is essential for effective selection and hybrid development. Certain hybrids exhibited superior performance in terms of fruit size, uniformity, and desirable quality attributes, suggesting their potential for commercial cultivation. Overall, the findings highlight substantial genetic diversity that can be strategically utilized in breeding programs aimed at enhancing yield potential, disease resistance, fruit quality, and adaptability to different agro-climatic conditions. This study provides a strong foundation for future crop improvement and the development of improved pumpkin varieties.
