POPULATION DYNAMICS OF ORANGE-BELLIED HIMALAYAN SQUIRREL, DREMOMYS LOKRIAH UNDER DIFFERENT HABITATS

Abstract

The investigation was conducted to know the population dynamics and fluctuation of Dremomys lokriah in different habitats viz. orchard, urban residential area, homestead garden, and farm store & godowns in Jorhat district of Assam, from October 2023 to September 2024. To estimate the population of Dremomys lokriah‘ Line transect’ method was used. The study revealed that there was a significant variation in the mean population density of the squirrel species among the different habitats. Among the four habitats the highest population density was recorded from homestead garden (291.83/km2) (SD= 52.62) while the lowest population density was recorded from orchard (74.58/km2) (SD=23.16). The population fluctuation recorded throughout the year showed the huge variation in population density and activity in different month of the year. During March and April month the highest population (113-363/km2) was recorded while during June and July the lowest population (47-222/km2) was recorded. This resulted due to various reasons like food availability, temperature variation, reproductive and parturition season etc.
