ISOLATION AND SELECTION OF MICROBIAL STRAINS CAPABLE OF DEGRADING ORGANIC MATTER IN THUNG NAI COMMUNE, PHU THO PROVINCE, VIETNAM

Abstract

In rural areas of Vietnam, the volume of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been increasing rapidly, At the same time collection and treatment rates remain limited, resulting in negative impacts on the environment and public health. Notably, rural MSW contains a high proportion of organic matter, primarily derived from food waste, spoiled vegetables, leaves, agricultural residues, and livestock activities, offering significant potential for biological treatment processes and energy recovery. However, the application of biological methods such as microbial composting in Vietnam remains limited, with current practices largely relying on land filling or rudimentary incineration. This study focuses on the isolation and selection of indigenous microbial strains with high activity to enhance the efficiency of organic matter degradation during the biological treatment of MSW. Additionally, it aims to improve biogas production and compost quality. The preliminary results provide an important scientific basis for the design of biological treatment systems suitable for rural conditions, contributing to pollution reduction, renewable energy recovery, and the advancement of a circular economy.
