ENVIRONMENTAL DISCOURSES: IN SELECTED TEXTS OF SCIENCE, MEDIA AND LITERATURE

Amod Kumar Rai and Zehra Shamsheer

Abstract

This research paper promises to construct a discourse that has still not been much discussed in the academic parlance. Actually, this pursuit in academics attempts, for the first time as far as our knowledge is concerned, to bring together three very different but somewhere deeply inter-connected disciplines. These are Science, Media and Literature. It tends to explore how narratives influence our understanding and action on ecological challenges and to underline what is the real crisis that has set earth ablaze. Confining oneself to just any one discipline, the researchers consider, will not be enough to cull complete and absolute truth regarding challenges that are being faced in the realms of environment. The proposed research paper entitled Mapping Environmental Discourses through Science, Media and Literature, intends to explore how environmental issues, themes, ideas, concerns and perspectives have been articulated, communicated, constructed and designed heretofore in different disciplines. Plenty of researches have been done in each of these significant fields viz. Science, Media and Literature, but it is done separately and a plausible outcome has been established in its respective arena. An analytical study that probes all these three fields together is surely in dearth. Environmental studies, by its field of coverage is interdisciplinary in nature, hence this interdisciplinary research would be more fruitful, in order to establish a more substantial, near to acceptable veracity, findings. It will prompt pertinent action for further conservation, betterment and construction of a healthy, viable and easily adaptable model.
