Abstract

The present study quantified the aboveground and belowground biomass and associated carbon sequestration potential of selected tree species in Rehekuri Wildlife Sanctuary, Karjat. A total of 763 individuals belonging to 15 tree species were recorded within the 217-ha study area. Biomass and carbon stock were estimated using a non-destructive allometric approach based on tree height and diameter at breast height (DBH). Tree height was measured using overlapping canopy observations and a Haga altimeter, while DBH was recorded at 1.32 m above ground level using a measuring tape. Aboveground and belowground organic carbon (t tree-¹) and total organic carbon for each species were computed and compared with allometric models. Delonix regia exhibited the highest carbon sequestration (103.63 t; 23 trees), whereas Limonia acidissima showed the lowest (2.47 t).
