TOURISM AND AGRICULTURE: EXPLORING SYNERGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE RURAL ECONOMIES

Jenni K Alex and Ratheesh E.R.

Abstract

The linkages between tourism and agriculture are increasingly being recognized as a powerful connection for sustainable rural development. Rural economies in India are often dependent on agriculture for livelihood and the prevalent under employment, volatility in income forces the rural youth to migrate to urban centres. Agri-tourism, which refers to tourism activities that take place on farms or in agricultural settings, offers a novel approach to addressing these challenges. It integrates farming with tourism activities enabling farmers to diversify income streams, preserve cultural heritage and attract visitors seeking authentic rural experiences. These activities may include farm stays, guided tours, organic food tasting, and hands - on farming experiences, cultural performances and local craft demonstrations. In this way Agri-tourism not only improves the economic viability of small scale farming but also helps preserve rural culture, traditional knowledge and landscapes that might otherwise be lost. Moreover, Agri-tourism becomes a growing segment of travelers who seek meaningful, educational and environmentally responsible experiences. Visitors gain insights into rural life, food production and sustainable practices, while host communities benefit from increased income and opportunities for social and economic inclusion. The blending of agriculture and tourism thus creates a diversified rural economy that is more resilient and adaptive to global economic shifts.
