Abstract
The term urban forestry includes diversity and management of all tree species located in and around cities. The study on urban forests in Indian cities is limited. Nagpur holds the position of one of the greenest cities f India wherein 18 percent of its area is under forest and plantations, 17 percent under cultivation and 2 percent under water bodies. During last decade, many developmental projects have been carried out changing the face of city. While it is historically known for its greenery and proximity to forest reserves, recent developmental activities have posed serious challenges to the cityâs tree cover and ecological balance. The present survey shows that city is provided with diverse vegetation and includes 170 tree species belonging to 48 families and 131 genera. The analytical study will serve as an important document to develop strategies for maintaining green spaces in the city.
