THE MAKING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF FOREST LEGISLATIONS IN INDIA: AN ANALYTICAL STUDY

Biplob Gogoi

Abstract

The paper examines the global context of forest legislations in India and make a brief inquiry into the development of post-colonial legislations in modern India. It attempts to deal with the challenges of making and implementation of Indian forest legislation with reference to the gaps between the wildlife acts and policies and their implementation in the country. With a special reference to the intrinsic role of the Indian government agencies, particularly the forest departments, the chapter purports to find out the predominant points of discord between the government’s enforcement mechanisms and affected communities in the course of implementation of modern, scientific conservation regimes which utterly disregard the traditional relationship between forests and people in the protected areas of the country.
