Rimlee Bora and Ashok Kumar Bora

Abstract

Development is a multidimensional concept influenced by economic, social, and infrastructural factors. This study analyses the inter-district development scenario of Assam, with a special focus on Morigaon district, to understand the spatial patterns of growth at both district and revenue circle levels. Assam exhibits significant regional disparities in development, categorized into five levels based on composite scores: Very High, High, Medium, Low, and Very Low. Morigaon falls under the low development category, highlighting its infrastructural and socio-economic challenges. An intra-district analysis reveals variations in development among revenue circles. The Morigaon revenue circle emerges as the most developed, benefitting from better infrastructure, governance, and economic opportunities, while Mikirbheta revenue circle is moderately developed. However, Mayong, Bhuragaon, and Laharighat revenue circles remainnder developed due to poor infrastructure, low literacy rates, inadequate healthcare, and frequent floods. This analysis underscores the urgent need for targeted policy interventions and resource allocation to bridge the development gap in Morigaon and other underdeveloped districts of Assam.
