SPATIAL VARIATION AND AVIAN DIVERSITY IN SAILANA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA

S.A. Mahiwal and S. Gaherwal

Abstract

This study explores the spatial variation in avian diversity across three distinct sites namely Sherpur, Shikharwadi and Amba-within Sailana Wildlife Sanctuary. A total of 46 species were recorded in Sherpur and Shikharwadi, with 35 species identified in Amba, representing a diverse range of families. The findings revealed that wetland-associated families, particularly Anatidae and Ardeidae, had the highest representation. Seasonality and habitat diversity significantly influenced species composition, with families such as Muscicapidae and Alcedinidae showing prominence across sites. This study underscores the need for tailored conservation strategies to preserve the avian diversity of Sailana Wildlife Sanctuary.
