IN VITRO ASSESSMENT OF ANTIOXIDANT, ANTIGLYCATION AND ALPHA GLUCOSIDASE INHIBITORY POTENTIAL OF EXTRACTS FROM DOLICHANDRONE FALCATA

Rakhee Dangi and Sagar Datir

Abstract

Dolichandrone falcata has been used in folk medicine to treat several ailments including diabetes. However, there is no data on its antiglycation activity. The present work aims to comparatively investigate the antiglycation, antioxidant and alpha glucosidase inhibition potential of crude total methanol (TM) and fractionated hexane (H), ethyl acetate (EA) and methanol (M) extracts of leaves and stem bark of D. falcata. Extracts prepared from stem bark exhibited higher total phenolic content (TPC) whereas the extracts prepared from leaves showed higher total flavonoid content (TFC). The TM, EA and M extracts of stem were more potent sources of ?-glucosidase inhibitors as compared to leaves. The stem extracts with higher antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS) were significantly more potent than extracts prepared from leaves in inhibiting carbonyl compounds.
