THE ROLE OF SPORTS IN ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE

N. Madhavan, Vinod Jacob and Anilkumar N.

Abstract

The role of sports in addressing climate change is gaining increasing recognition, as the global sports industry not only contributes to environmental impacts but also possesses unique potential for driving positive change. As players, organizations and spectators grow more conscious of the environmental issues confronting the world, the relationship between sports and climate change is receiving more attention. Although there are hazards associated with climate change for sports, there is also a chance for the sports sector to actively support climate action. Using its worldwide influence to support sustainability projects, increase awareness and motivate behavioural changes, this article examines how sports can be a potent catalyst in the fight against climate change. Athletes’ psychological reactions to climate change are also discussed, highlighting the necessity for sport and exercise psychology to include climate resilience techniques. As the climate crisis worsens, the sports industry has a unique chance to go from contributing to climate problems to spearheading climate activism, changing its operations and spurring more significant social change. Thus, the study emphasizes how stakeholders must work together in order to fully utilize sports’ transformative potential in creating a sustainable future. Sports can be a catalyst for change by using its worldwide influence to promote sustainable behaviours, increase awareness and encourage a wide range of people to get involved in climate solutions.
