Abstract
The present work was carried out to assess the water quality index of Hirekere and Dyavanakere Lakes. This study was focused mainly on the seasonal variation of physico-chemical characteristics and the Water Quality Index (WQI), Physico-chemical characteristics like pH, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, chloride, total alkalinity, total hardness, calcium, magnesium and nitrates and biochemical oxygen demand parameters were analysed season-wise for a period of one year (Nov 2022âOct 2023). The WQI analysis reveals that both the lakes indicate consistently fall within the âGoodâ category (WQI: 26â60) Hirekere Lake indicates a slightly better water quality category, (WQI: 48.158 in winter, 48.535 in summer and 47.3484 in the rainy season). Dyavanakere Lake shows similar trends with WQI values of 48.506 in the rainy season, 45.325 in winter and a peak of 51.741 in summer. Seasonal rainfall improved water quality due to diluting the pollutants. During summer, water quality shows slightly higher values due to less water and additional sources of contaminants added to the Lake.
