Abstract
Carbon exists in water in mainly two forms - carbon dioxide and carbonates. The estimation of carbon dioxide level in water includes certain limitations due to its high solubility and rate of diffusion in water. In natural water systems, carbon dioxide concentration can indicate the level of oxygen, pH and overall water quality. In the present study, an attempt has been made to determine the carbon dioxide concentration in the water samples collected from 10 different banks of river Ganga located around the city of Kolkata, by titration method.
