ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF ENDOPHYTIC FUNGI FROM THE LEAVES OF SOME MEDICINAL PLANTS

J.D. Pawar and A.A. Kulkarni

Abstract

The present investigation was undertaken with an aim to isolate and identify the endophytic fungi associated with the healthy leaf tissues of Catharanthus roseus (L.) Moringa oleifera(L.) and Terminalia arjuna (Roxb.) Sixteen endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves of above three medicinal plants six from Catharanthus, six from Moringa and four from Arjuna plant on Potato Dextrose Agar medium. The isolated Fungi were identified morphologically by mounting the specimens on slides and observing under microscope. Identification of isolated fungi was also done at molecular level by Sanger Sequencing method. The ITS gene sequence was used to carry out BLAST with the database of NCBI gene bank database. ITS region was amplified by using primers ITS1 and ITS4. The results represented different strains and isolates of Cladosporium and Fusarium species.
