Abstract

Ecotourism, as the name indicates, is a way of tourism which aims to conserve the ecosystems in our environment. It is a sustainable form of tourism where the tourists travel not just for pleasure, but also aim to contribute to the environment by learning how to conserve the environment. Ecotourism is also a form of tourism that helps the local communities and therefore ecotourism has seen a considerable rise in its popularity around the globe. Ecotourism in India is valuable given that India has a rich biodiversity which includes dense forests, vibrant coastal regions, mountainous areas, as well as deserts. These make India to have a tremendous potential for ecotourism. In this review article we look at some of India’s well-known ecotourism destinations. We look at the social, economic as well as the environmental impacts of ecotourism in these areas. We also delve into the challenges associated with the conservation of the environment. In the concluding part of this review article, we look at how the ecotourism concept in India can be enhanced; while not only looking for the preservation of the natural heritage that India offers, but also looking out for the well-being and economic growth of the communities involved in the process. Finally, there is discussion on the future of ecotourism in India considering India’s vision for 2030, and the sustainable growth strategies.
