EXPLORING THE MEDICINAL VALUE OF ASHOKA (SARACA ASHOKA) IN HEALTH AND HEALING

Abstract

Ashoka, also known as Saraca asoca (Roxb.) Wilde, is an indigenous plant with numerous traditional meanings that belongs to the Legume subfamily Caesalpinaceae. The ashoka tree grows in rain forests. Its former range included the centre Deccan plateau and the middle region of the Western Ghats in the Indian subcontinent’s western coastal zone. Herbal treatments were utilized methodically in the ancient Ayurveda medical system. One of the top 20 plants sold in the Ayurveda and herbal industries, ashoka bark is the primary component of nearly all remedies for gynecological conditions. This plant’s whole is thought to be pharmacological significant, and it has been specifically utilised to treat several gynecological conditions, including dysfunctional uterine hemorrhage, menorrhagia, and leucorrhoea. It is said that glycoside, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins are present in Saraca asoca. It has anti-bacterial, anti-implantation, antitumor, anti-pregestational, anti-estrogenic, anti-oxytocic, uterotonic, anti-cancer, and spasmogenic properties. This study includes pharmacological descriptions of diverse plant sections, phytochemical components, and variously reported pharmacological activities.
