Abstract

Water resources have great importance for survival of life. The quality of water acts as an indicator of the environmental health and wellbeing of the human society. The present study was carried out to evaluate seasonal variation in the physicochemical parameter of water quality and to compute the status of water quality index (WQI) of Udhuwa Lake, Sahibganj district of Jharkhand State. Physico-chemical parameters, such as pH, DO, total hardness, electrical conductivity, chloride, phosphate, nitrate, BOD, TDS, and COD, were measured using the standard technique on the water samples. Seasonal water quality analysis was carried out using standard methods for examination of lake water. The study noticed that the parameters pH, EC, P-PO4, BOD, and COD reached their highest levels during the summer season. On the other hand, average results indicated that EC, Cl-, N-NO3, BOD, and COD were at their lowest during the monsoon period. All parameter values, except for dissolved oxygen, were within the permissible limits as established by BIS in 2012. Based on the Water Quality Index (WQI), the water quality of Udhuwa Lake was identified as excellent.
