CONSERVATION PRIORITY AND A NEW LOCALITY RECORD OF HEDYCHIUM AUREUM (ZINGIBERACEAE): AN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF MEGHALAYA, INDIA

S. Debnath and D. Vijayan

Abstract

In this work, the geographical range of Hedychium aureum, an endangered plant species in the Zingiberaceae family, has been a subject of recent discussion due to the discovery of a new distributional locality in Meghalaya. This finding represents a significant addition to our understanding of the species’ distribution and habitat preferences. Our study included a thorough morphological examination and molecular analysis using the rbcL region of chloroplast DNA. The plant faces a significant risk within its natural habitat, underscoring the need for additional research aimed at understanding its life cycle and identifying specific factors jeopardizing its survival.
