Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract of red pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) on Candida albicans, and determine the concentration of the most effective ethanol extract to obstruct the growth of Candida albicans. The phytochemical test showed that flavonoids were secondary metabolites contained in ethanol extract of red pomegranate. The antifungal activity test was carried out by the diffusion method in order for the well. The testing process is carried out using variations in the concentration of pomegranate peel extract 10%, 20%, 40% and 50%. The four concentrations were compared with negative controls in the form of sterile distilled water and positive control in the form of antibiotic nystatin. Data from the test results are the four concentrations of pomegranate peel extract can obstruct the growth of fungi Candida albicans. This is indicated by the presence of clear areas around the concentration. The test data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA at a 1% error level with a sig value of 0.00 <0.01. These results indicate that there is a significant effect between the four concentrations of ethanol extract of red pomegranate peel on the diameter of the obstruct zone. To determine the concentration that was effective in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans compared to positive control (antibiotic nystatin), the Tukey test was carried out with an error rate of 1%. From the test results obtained by ethanol extract of red pomegranate peel which has the most effective antifungal ability is pomegranate peel extract with a concentration of 10%.
