Prabanjan Kumar ReddyAbstract Study on the food and feeding habits of Oreochromis mossambicus was conducted between March, 2007 to March 2008 from Nellore and Survepalli Reservoirs, Andhra Pradesh. Feeding habit indicated that the species is herbivorous mainly feeding on blue green algae, diatoms, macrophytes, green algae, detritus material, copepods, cladocerans, semi digested matter and among others benthic algae, dinoflagellates, insects and bivalve larvae. December was observed to be high and September as minimum feeding for both the sexes. Analysis of degrees of fullness of stomach on month-wise and length-wise basis indicated maximum percentage of moderately fed stomach for both the sexes. High Gastro-Somatic Index (GASI) of 1.79 and low of 0.41 was observed in November and February respectively, for males. For females the same was high in November (2.48) and low of 0.15 in August.
