SUPPRESSION OF TOXIC EMISSIONS FROM ROCKET PROPELLANTSS.K. SAHUAbstract Thermodynamic performance evaluation of rocket propellants based on Glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) diols mixed with 5-15% hydroxy terminated polybutadiene (HPTB) was carried out by using computer software NASA-CEC-71. Theoretical exhaust product analysis showed the presence of toxic gases like HCN. Detection of HCN and measurement of its concentration were carried out by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral measurements and cyanide ion-selective electrode measurements respectively. Suppression of HCN emission could be achieved by increasing the hydrocarbon content of the curing agent and fuel binder.
