Abstract

The starting system failure causes engine staring problem and influences emission and drivability of the vehicle. In case of medium duty commercial vehicles involve frequent short journeys, regular inspection of the starting system is advisable. If there is a fault in the starting system, the equipment is usually first tested in the vehicle, suppose the fault is with starter motor, it is either replaced or repaired with the help of service information bulletins and servicing instructions. Before it is refitted on the vehicle, the starter motor should be tested on the combination test bench. In this study to avoid such unwanted breakdown of the vehicle causing emission and financial losses, a fuzzy logic based fault detection and diagnosis system has been developed for implementation on medium duty commercial vehicles. Information of current and voltage of starting system with various faulty conditions are acquired by conducting set of experiments and practiced using fuzzy logic fault diagnosis system (FLFDS). With the help of FLFDS, starting system faults are detected for further corrective action and helps to reduce emission due to continuous attempts. A graphical user interface (GUI) software is also developed using MATLAB software and tested using sample data obtained from real time starting system. The success rate of developed graphical user interface (GUI) software was found to be 95%.
