MARKOVIAN PREDICTION OF REGROWTH FOREST VEGETATIONS IN OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY ILE-IFE, SOUTH-WESTERN NIGERIAChukwuka, K.S.Abstract The rainforest of the Obafemi Awolowo University was characterized by species enumeration and inventory in 17 sample plots. A general uniformity in species composition was observed for all the plots studied with the exception of Plots 5 and 6 where Brachystegia eurycoma was found as dominant canopy species with very wide canopies. The nature of succession of these plots was assessed by a modification of Horns (1975) Markovian change. Application of this model was, however, found not to be satisfactory in assessing the succession of the sampled plots because it showed that regrowth species such as Microdesmis puberula and Napoleona vogelii will form the next generation canopy.
