EFFECTS OF SULPHUR DIOXIDE EXPOSURE ON GROWTH AND PHOTOSYNTHETIC PIGMENTS IN LYCOPERSICON ESCULENTUM

MUKESH K. BHARDWAJ, AMITA BHARDWAJ AND RAHUL BHARDWAJ

Abstract

The sulphur dioxide is an important pollutant and it adversely affects many metabolic and physiologic processes which result in reduction of overall growth and yield of the plants (Black & Unsworth, 1979)4. During present studies growth and biochemical parameters were taken under consideration. The observations revealed that the plants exposed to different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 ppm) of SO2 showed variable results. The plants showed a slight decrease in growth, photosynthetic pigments and ascorbic acid contents when exposed to lower doses of SO2 as compared to those exposed to higher doses of SO2.
