SOIL LEAD POLLUTION ALONGSIDE SOME MAJOR ROADS IN MAURITIUSN. S. CHOONG KWET YIVE, K. NAGA AND H. LI KAM WAHAbstract Lead levels in soil alongside four Mauritian roads were determined using atomic absorption sepectroscopy. The range observed was 0 lagig (soil sample collected at plaine Champagne) to 1938 jig! g (soil sample collected near the M1 motorway, Rdl). Accumulation of lead in soil was found to correlate well with traffic density. Soil alongside roads having a north-south orientation had their west side more polluted due the influence of the South East Trade Winds.
