Abstract

Distillery waste water possess serious environmental hazards causing eutrophication, adversely affecting the human health and the flora and fauna of the waterbodies. The conventional treatment methods applied these days are not satisfactory. So, it is a need of the present day to find alternative methods to achieve this aim. Microbial treatment serves to be the best option for the treatment of waste waters. The present work was carried out to study the physico-chemical characters of distillery waste water and to isolate, screen, characterize and identify the micro-organisms with a potential of decolorizing distillery waste water. Two isolates were obtained during the study. Their decolorizing activity in presence of various supplements for different incubation periods was checked. Both of the isolates were found to be promising for future use.
