MICROBIAL PRETREATMENT OF SUGARCANE BAGASSE FOR DELIGNIFICATION AND ITS EFFECT ON THE PAPER PROPERTIESHARIT JHA, M. SAPRE, J.D. DHAKE AND M.B. PATILAbstract Sugarcane bagasse is an agricultural residue widely available and useful for pulp and paper industry as raw material. Biopulping of bagasse by microorganisms not only decreases its lignin content but also makes it more susceptible to thermochemical treatment. P chrysosporium and K. aerogenes were selected from the screened microorganisms and were used for biopulping, Biopulping decreased Kappa number of pulp and also has led to an increase in brightness of the pulp and paper with comparable strength properties. K. aerogenes A was proven to be more efficient due to the lack of cellulolytic activity and lesser incubation time under optimi4ed conditions of pH. temperature, nitrogen source, nitrogen concentration and sugar concentration.
