Abstract

Diesel engines are getting popularity because of more fuel economy. But removal of NOx emission from oxygen rich exhaust gases is quiet difficult by conventional after treatment system. In the present work new catalytic converter with zeolite based catalyst is used to reduce NOx emission. Na form of zsm-5 zeolite was procured from market. Two different catalyst ( Ce and Cu - zsm5 and Ce and Fe- zsm5) using the Na form zsm-5 zeolite have been prepared by exchanging Na+ irons with cerium - copper and Cerium - iron metal. After that these zeolite powders were wash-coated separately into the cordierite honey comb monolith structure. Experiment was conducted on the Kirloskar TV1, four stroke, single cylinder, air cooled diesel engine, associated with eddy current dynamometer. Measure the NOx, CO, HC, CO2 and O2 emissions with the help of AVL DI-gas analyzer. Initially the engine was run without catalytic converter and load tests were conducted at various loads (4,7,10,13, and 16 kW). Then the Ce.Cu / Ce.Fe - zsm5 zeolite based catalytic converter was attached nearby exhaust manifold and the similar procedure was repeated. The result revealed that the in-house made Ce Cu- zsm5 zeolite and CeFe- zsm5 zeolite catalytic converters reduce emissions better than the conventional catalytic converter.
