Abstract

Generally textile industries in India do not treat the wastewater produced because of financial issues and poor understanding about its effects. Electrochemical coagulation is a low cost technique which can be employed for this purpose. Stock solution is prepared of the reactive black-05 dye. Electrochemical coagulation is carried out for two litre stock solutions for an electrolysis time of 150 minutes by varying voltage and initial pH. Characteristics of the dye solution are determined before and after electrochemical coagulation treatment. Sample is drawn for every 30 minutes of electrolysis. The optimum condition for treatment of textile industry dye (Reactive black-05) wastewater using electrochemical coagulation cell with stainless steel electrodes is at a voltage of 30V, initial pH of 8.0-, and 120-minutes electrolysis time. For this condition the colour removal efficiency is 98.90%, TDS is 600 ppm, COD is 52 mg/l, and pH is 6.5.
