ANALYSIS OF GENETIC DIVERSITY IN SOME CULTIVARS OF CAPSICUM ANNUM L. USING KARYOTYPING AND MOLECULAR APPROACH

Ajanita Mazumdar and Jinu Devi Rajkumari

Abstract

Chilli belongs to the genus Capsicum. In the state of Assam, India; many cultivars of chilli are grown. The present study was undertaken to analyse the genetic diversity amongst some local chilli cultivars of Assam using karyotype and molecular approach. Karyotype analysis revealed differences in chromosomes amongst the cultivars. Restriction digestion of the DNA isolated from the cultivars showed different sized bands in the agarose gel. The results showed that karyotype analysis and restriction digestion techniques can be effectively used to study the molecular diversity in chilli plants.
