CASE STUDY ON ENERGY CONSERVATION ANALYSIS IN PASSIVE MATERIALS FEATURES FOR RESIDENTIAL HOUSES IN CHENNAI, INDIA

Binil Sundar and S. Prince Arockia Doss

Abstract

This is a case study which seeks to identify the relationship between real energy consumption data and residential housing design data by changing the passive materials. A number of individual houses were randomly selected as sample building for the study which introduces a method to use real energy consumption data and to calculate the extra energy use related to climatic factors on different locations. The factors governing the building indoor and outdoor temperature variations and discuss about the Power usage, Carbon emission factor, Carbon foot prints, Carbon reduction by comparing the building with the application of existing material and passive materials by simulation. This paper is about a case study on Chennai villa houses where current building practices use a normal bricks concrete way of construction. In this research suggesting that with certain changes of using passive materials like prefabricated concrete wall, e glass and insula tiles etc, that owners will be able to recoup the increased investment within a decade via reduced energy bills with added benefit of improved comfort. To study heat transfer and the temperature distribution through passive materials can be done by analyzing and stimulating possible economical designs. This study presents and identifies relationships between the increase in mean daily energy consumption data and trends of building design data of the sample houses and establishes the starting point feasibility for further study for developing passive energy design guides for building energy efficiency houses.
