THE ECOLOGY OF SOCIETY: CONCEPTUALIZING POLLUTION IN THE CONTEXT OF NILGIRIS IRULAS

B. Gnana Bharathi

Abstract

In the culture of Nilgiris Irulas, the aspect of biocentrism plays a vital role for their holistic well being. In contemporary times, throughout the globe, scientific conservation policies and practices have often suppressed many significant non-scientific forms of knowledge and other traditional means and ways of knowing nature. The paper attempts to understand the notion of pollution through the cultural context of Nilgiri Irulas thereby conceptualizing them and their moral norms for achieving a wider cognitive justice towards conserving their ecosystem.
