THE KEY DETERMINANTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS

Orose Leelakulthanit

Abstract

These days environmental quality has deteriorated dramatically, and it is necessary that everybody be environmentally conscious in order to protect the environment. In order to do this, this study investigates the factors affecting the formation of environmental consciousness in the mind of the general public. The determinants that are seen to influence environmental consciousness here are responsibility, altruism, being a nature lover, the concept of long-termism, Buddhism, self-efficacy, parents, friends, mass media, and the knowledge of how to protect the environment. A total of 400 responses were collected from self-identified adult pro-environment shoppers in Bangkok. The results of the multiple regression analysis indicated that the positive factors affecting environmental consciousness were responsibility, altruism, being a nature lover, long-termism and Buddhism.
