BIODEGRADATION OF DISTILLERY WASTEWATER USING VARIOUS MICROBIAL INOCULUMS IN HYBRID UASB REACTORS

R. THIYAGUA AND P. SIVARAJANB

Abstract

This study examines the competitive and efficient degradation of distillery wastewater using two lab scale hybrid UASB reactors R1 and R2 with effective volume of 12.5 L and 15.5 L respectively. The reactors were operated continuously with gradual increase in organic loading rate. COD removal efficiency ranging from 95 to 70% was obtained in reactor R1 with OLR ranging from 0.25 kg COD/m3.d to 27.40 kg COD/m3.d and 95 to 92% was obtained in reactor R2 at an OLR varying from 0.25 kg COD/m3.d to 7.53 kg COD/m3.d at constant HRT of 24h. The anaerobically digested sludge has high biomass activity, compared with SEM observation and also an accumulation of microbial biomass attached with the media. The efficient reactor operation has a group of microbes, which enhance the conversion of high organic matter into biogas.
