EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON EFFECTIVE SETTLING COLUMN FOR TURBIDITY REMOVAL

USHA SUBBURAJ AND T. VELRAJAN

Abstract

An experiment was carried out in a specially designed settling column to study the effects of initial turbidity, coagulants used on Type II (Flocculant Settling) settling for effective sedimentation. Alum and Chitosan were known as Chemical and Natural coagulants respectively which are used in this study. The optimum dosage of coagulants such as Alum, Chitosan and blend with of Alum and Chitosan was determined by conducting jar test. An experiment was carried out in the settling column with addition of coagulants and without coagulant for three different ranges of synthetic turbid water, which is prepared by bentonite clay. The initial turbidity was taken as 118.5 NTU, 71 NTU, and 36 NTU. The study showed that the settling process blend with alum and Chitosan coagulant was found to be better than alum alone. It was observed that the effectiveness of coagulants increased as the initial turbidity increased. The overall turbidity removal was calculated by using Isopercentage curve at different time intervals such as 60 minutes & 120 minutes of settling time. The overall removal efficiency of low turbidity was better at 60 minutes than 120 minutes of settling time.
