ANALYSIS OF PHYSIOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF RIVER GANGA

RAJESH ARORA, I.P. PANDEY AND V.K. TEWARI

Abstract

Estimation of the physiochemical properties of River Ganga at five different sampling sites right from the origin of river Ganga upto Rishikesh, i.e. Gangotri, Harshil, Uttarkashi, Tehri and Rishikesh have been carried out in the present study. Sampling was done in the month of January- February 2017 (winter) and May- June 2017(summer). Water samples were taken for analysis as per Standard methods in the laboratory. Analysis was done on parameters like – Temperature, Turbidity, pH, TDS, COD, BOD, Electrical Conductivity, Total Hardness, Total Alklinity, chloride, Calcium, Magnesium, Na, K,SO4 -2and heavy metals like Ni, Cr, Cd, Mn, Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, etc. Increase in Temperature does not have much effect on the quality of water. Rise in values of E.C indicates the low solubility of salts; alkalinity values is due to dissolved carbonates and bicarbonates. This is also the cause for increased hardness of water on moving down the River. pH indicates increased value from Gangotri to Rishikesh, Turbidity is minimum at Gangotri and maximum at Rishikesh, which is above the permissible limits of WHO. Abundance of Ca and Mg are within the permissible limits. Heavy metals are not dedected hence there is no harmful effect.
